Ti-3Al-2.5V, a near-alpha titanium alloy offering an excellent balance of strength, ductility, and formability, particularly suited for tubing and hydraulic systems.
Product Overview
Bokang's Grade 9 Titanium is manufactured using advanced vacuum arc remelting technology, ensuring exceptional purity and consistent mechanical properties.
Grade 9 titanium, known as Ti-3Al-2.5V, is a near-alpha titanium alloy containing approximately 3% aluminum and 2.5% vanadium. It occupies a performance niche between the commercially pure grades and the higher-strength Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5). The moderate alloying provides a significant increase in strength over CP titanium—approximately 20-40% higher than Grade 2—while retaining much better cold formability and weldability than Grade 5.
This alloy is particularly renowned for its excellent performance in tubular product forms. It combines good bendability, high strength-to-weight ratio, and superior corrosion resistance, making it the industry standard for high-performance hydraulic lines, bicycle frames, and heat exchanger tubing. Its creep resistance is also better than CP grades, allowing its use at moderately elevated temperatures. Grade 9 is often selected when a component requires more strength than pure titanium but must still be readily formable into complex shapes or welded without extensive post-weld heat treatment.

Key Advantages of Bokang Grade 9 Titanium
Discover why our titanium wire stands out in the industry
Superior Tube Bending & Formability
Exhibits excellent ductility and a low ratio of yield-to-tensile strength, allowing tight-radius bending of tubing without wrinkling or excessive springback.
High Pressure Capability
The combination of medium-high strength and good toughness enables its use in thin-walled tubing for high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Enhanced Fabricability vs. Grade 5
Easier to cold form, bend, and weld than Ti-6Al-4V, often requiring less specialized tooling and post-fabrication treatment.

Material Selection Guide
How to choose the right titanium wire for your application
Identify the Need for Formable Strength
Select Grade 9 when the application requires significantly more strength than Grade 2 but involves complex bending, flaring, or swaging of tubing that would be difficult with Grade 5.
Evaluate Pressure & Weight Constraints
For lightweight, high-pressure fluid systems, Grade 9 tubing often provides the optimal balance, allowing thinner walls than Grade 2 while being more formable than Grade 5.
Consider the Welding Environment
For assemblies requiring multiple welds, Grade 9's good weldability without mandatory post-weld heat treatment can simplify manufacturing compared to Grade 5.
Assess Creep or Thermal Cycle Needs
For applications with sustained loads at temperatures up to about 400°C (750°F), Grade 9 offers better creep resistance than CP grades, making it a suitable intermediate choice.
Production Process & Quality Control
Our rigorous manufacturing process ensures consistent quality
Alloying & Electrode Manufacturing
Precise amounts of aluminum and vanadium master alloy are blended with titanium sponge and compacted into a consumable electrode.
Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)
The electrode is melted to form a homogeneous ingot. Grade 9 typically requires double melting for adequate chemical uniformity.
Hot Extrusion or Piercing
The ingot is forged to a billet, which is then hot-extruded or pierced on a mandrel mill to create a hollow tube shell.
Cold Pilgering & Drawing
The tube shell undergoes multiple cycles of cold pilgering (rocking) or drawing with intermediate vacuum anneals to reduce diameter and wall thickness to final specs.
Final Heat Treatment & Straightening
Tubes are given a final vacuum anneal to achieve the specified mechanical properties (typically annealed condition), then straightened and cut to length.
NDT & Pressure Testing
100% non-destructive testing (eddy current, ultrasonic) ensures integrity. Hydraulic pressure testing is performed to validate performance for fluid systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pure titanium wire
Grade 9 provides the ideal compromise: it is strong enough to handle high hydraulic pressures (up to 4000+ psi) with thin walls for weight savings, highly formable to route through tight aircraft spaces, weldable for system assembly, and maintains excellent corrosion resistance against Skydrol and other hydraulic fluids. Its properties are specifically tailored to meet aerospace specifications like AMS 4943.
Yes, and it is very common, especially in high-quality frames. While Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is stronger, allowing for slightly thinner tube walls, Grade 9 offers easier and more consistent welding for frame builders. The resulting frame is still extremely strong, lightweight, and durable. The choice often comes down to the builder's preference and specific frame design philosophy.
Grade 9 exhibits corrosion resistance very similar to commercially pure titanium in most environments, including seawater, chlorides, and oxidizing acids. The aluminum and vanadium additions are both soluble in the titanium matrix and do not form detrimental secondary phases that would compromise the protective oxide layer's stability.
Yes, Grade 9 is available in sheet and strip form. Its formability is superior to Grade 5, making it suitable for applications requiring deeper draws or more complex shapes than possible with Ti-6Al-4V, but where Grade 2 lacks sufficient strength after forming. It is used in formed chemical processing components and certain airframe parts.
The recommended filler wire is ERTi-9, which matches the base metal composition. In some cases, ERTi-5 (Ti-6Al-4V) filler can be used for higher strength welds, but this may reduce weld metal ductility. For optimal corrosion resistance and property matching in critical systems, using the matching Grade 9 filler is the preferred practice.
